Google has opened its generative AI performance report to everyone in Search Console. It shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date.
That matters if customers are finding you through AI answers as well as ordinary blue links. You do not need a new marketing strategy overnight. You do need to know whether your best pages are showing up there at all.
What the new report actually shows
The report tracks impressions in Google's AI search features. It does not show clicks from those features. So it answers "are we being seen in AI answers?" rather than "how much traffic did AI send us?".
Google has also added a control that lets site owners opt out of generative AI search features. Google says opting out will not be used as a ranking signal for normal results. Opted-out sites simply get no impressions or traffic from those AI features.
For most local and small-business sites, staying visible in AI answers is useful, so opting out is rarely the first move.
What this means for your business
If a handful of your service or guide pages already appear in AI results, that is a clue. Those pages are written clearly enough for Google to summarise. They are also the pages worth strengthening with better answers, clearer headings and up-to-date examples.
If the report is empty, do not panic. AI features are still uneven by industry and query. Focus on pages that already earn ordinary search clicks, then make them more useful rather than chasing AI-only tricks.
A short checklist
- Open Search Console and find the generative AI performance report.
- Note which pages have impressions, and on which devices or countries.
- Open those pages and check they still answer the customer's real question in plain English.
- Leave the opt-out control alone unless you have a clear reason to hide from AI answers.
- Keep publishing practical pages that match how people ask for help, not filler.
If you want help reading the report against your wider site, our SEO and GEO services cover that kind of review. For a broader look at how we build sites that stay findable, see website design and development.
FAQ
Does an AI Overview impression mean someone visited my site?
No. The report counts visibility in AI answers. It does not count clicks through to your pages.
Should I opt out of AI search features?
Usually no. Most businesses benefit from being mentioned. Opt out only if you have a specific reason to keep content out of those features.
Will this replace my normal Google rankings?
No. Ordinary search results still matter. Treat the AI report as an extra visibility signal, not a replacement for solid pages and Search Console basics.
What should I do this week?
Open the report, list the pages that already appear, and improve those pages first. That is the highest-value work for most small sites.
