YouTube's new AI search starts your video in the middle. Is yours ready?

YouTube's AI search, Ask YouTube, now answers questions with clips that start from the most relevant moment of a video. It is US only for now. Here is what UK businesses should change in their videos before it arrives.

On 12 October 2026, YouTube brought Ask YouTube, its conversational AI search, to the YouTube app on phones, joining the existing web and TV versions. Instead of a plain list of videos, Ask YouTube answers a question with a short written summary plus clips from videos and Shorts, and each clip plays from the moment YouTube judges most relevant to the question. It is only live in the United States for now, but YouTube says availability is expanding, so UK businesses with videos on YouTube have a window to get ready.

The practical change is easy to state. A potential customer may meet your video at minute four, not at your intro. If that section does not make sense on its own, or never mentions who you are, you lose them.

What is Ask YouTube?

Ask YouTube is a chat-style search tool built into YouTube. YouTube's announcement, written by Emily Moxley, VP of Product Management for Viewer AI, says it lets people ask longer, more complex questions, refine them with follow-ups and get results in an interactive layout. 9to5Google reports that it runs on Google's Gemini models and is no longer limited to YouTube Premium subscribers.

The key facts so far:

  • Mobile launch: 12 October 2026, for US viewers on Android and iOS, adding to web and TV.
  • How people reach it: tap Search, then the new Ask option, as Android Authority explains.
  • What a response looks like: text answers mixed with long-form videos, Shorts and short clips, each labelled with the video title and channel name, according to YouTube's Ask YouTube help page.
  • Where clips start: at the timestamp most relevant to the viewer's question.
  • Who cannot use it: supervised kid accounts and the YouTube Kids app.
  • What is coming next: Ask YouTube while watching Shorts and live streams.

The feature started life as a desktop test for US Premium subscribers in April, as Search Engine Journal reported at the time, before opening up on the web and on TVs.

Is Ask YouTube available in the UK?

Not the search version, not yet. YouTube's help page lists users in the United States searching in English, and says availability is gradually expanding. YouTube has not given a UK date.

A related feature is already here, though. Ask YouTube on the watch page, which lets viewers ask questions about the video they are watching, is available in the United Kingdom on selected videos. UK viewers are already getting used to asking YouTube questions rather than typing a couple of keywords.

Why this matters for UK small businesses

YouTube is not a niche channel in this country. Ofcom's Online Nation research found that YouTube was used by 94% of UK adult internet users in May 2025, who spent an average of 51 minutes a day on it, and that figure does not include viewing on the TV set. A good share of that time goes on how-to videos, product reviews and "is it worth it" questions, which is exactly the kind of search a local trade or small brand wants to win.

Conversational search changes the shape of those searches. Instead of typing "boiler noise", someone might ask why their combi boiler is making a banging sound and whether it is safe to keep using. YouTube's help page says Ask YouTube ranks clips on relevance, engagement and quality, much like standard YouTube search, and picks out the parts of videos that directly answer the question. That favours videos which answer a clear question, clearly, at a clear point in the video.

It is the same shift we have been tracking on Google, where AI Overviews now show more links to the pages they summarise, and with AI assistants, where more customers ask AI to find a local business and then check your website. YouTube is becoming another AI answer engine, and your videos are its source material.

What this means for your business videos

You do not need to reshoot everything. Start with your five most-watched or most useful videos and work through this list:

  1. Add chapters. YouTube's video chapters guide explains how to add timestamps and titles in the description. The first must start at 00:00 and you need at least three. Name each chapter after the question it answers, in your customer's words.
  2. Make every section stand on its own. Open each section by stating the question, then answer it. Drop lines such as "as I mentioned earlier", because the viewer may not have seen earlier.
  3. Say who you are mid-video. Mention your business name and where you work once inside each main answer, in a natural sentence. Someone dropped in at minute four never heard your intro.
  4. Put the useful bit first. If a section covers a price range, a measurement or a key step, lead with it rather than saving it for the end of a long build-up.
  5. Write titles and descriptions as answers. Use the plain question a customer would ask, then a one-line answer in the description.
  6. Link to the right page on your website. Put the most relevant service page in the description, not just your homepage. A viewer who likes what they hear needs an easy next step.

None of this is wasted effort if Ask YouTube takes a while to reach the UK. Clear chapters and self-contained sections already help viewers who skip around, and they make your videos easier to reuse as clips on social media.

Do not forget the website behind the video

Video earns the attention, but most enquiries still happen on your website. If your video promises a fixed-price service and your site shows last year's prices, or the link lands on a slow page that is awkward to use on a phone, the trust you built in that clip goes straight out of the window. A video and a website that say the same thing, in the same tone, work much harder together than either does alone.

FAQ

What is Ask YouTube?

Ask YouTube is YouTube's conversational AI search. You ask a question in plain language and it replies with text and video clips that start at the most relevant moment, and you can ask follow-up questions to narrow things down.

Is Ask YouTube available in the UK?

Not yet for search. It is live for US users searching in English on computers, phones and TVs, and YouTube says it is expanding gradually. Ask YouTube on the watch page is already available in the UK on selected videos.

Do I need a big channel to appear in Ask YouTube?

Not necessarily. YouTube says clips are ranked on relevance, engagement and quality. A small channel with a clear, well-structured answer to a specific question can still be the most relevant result.

Do video chapters help with Ask YouTube?

YouTube has not said chapters are a ranking factor for Ask YouTube. They do split your video into clearly labelled sections, which makes it easier for viewers, and for any system looking for the part that answers a question, to find the right moment.
